The Company

Evonetix is a start-up company that is set to revolutionize de novo gene synthesis as needed to facilitate the fast-growing and incredibly exciting field of synthetic biology.  Our technology is based upon a novel silicon array, manufactured with semiconductor microfabrication techniques and capable of independent control of many thousands of miniaturized reaction sites, allowing massive parallelism of the DNA synthesis process and on-chip DNA assembly with integrated error removal.

Our community is a closely-knit multidisciplinary team of biologists, physicists, synthetic and surface chemists, and mechanical, electronic and software engineers.

We have just closed our $30M Series B funding round and recently moved to a state-of-the-art facility in central Cambridge, allowing us to undertake significant recruitment to enable the development of our commercial DNA synthesiser.

The Position

Our novel approach to DNA synthesis and assembly is set to revolutionise what is possible with a desktop DNA synthesiser. One of the key components to this system will be the cloud application for designing and managing DNA sequences for synthesis on our device.

We are looking for a bioinformatician, or biologist interested in moving into bioinformatics, to join the Cloud Engineering group and help develop a set of tools, algorithms, and workflows to allow our end-users to integrate our platform with their upstream and downstream workflows.

Responsibilities include gathering user requirements, defining system functionality, writing code, and researching/validating open-source bioinformatics tools. The successful candidate will be highly self-sufficient in their duties, taking responsibility for areas of functionality whilst also benefiting from a supportive working environment.

You will work within the software engineering team across the whole stack to support the business objectives by planning and delivering client-facing and internal greenfield applications and systems.  You will have the opportunity to work on bioinformatics tools, e-commerce systems, and business intelligence applications, as well as:

  • Design and develop sequence design tools and algorithms
  • Understand user lab processes and workflows and help develop cloud-based workflows to support the biology and chemistry teams.
  • Integrate with other lab systems
  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Find and validate open-source bioinformatics tools
  • Gather requirements
  • Translate requirements into features

This is a unique opportunity to join early in our product's lifecycle and help shape the direction of our cloud platform and development practices, participating in the development of a unique third-generation gene synthesis platform.

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience with software engineering and at least one programming language (R, Python, PERL, Java)
  • Minimum BSc degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, or another relevant field
  • Experience working within a lab environment

  • User requirement gathering and business analysis
